Parking/Access Road Notes

Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All small easy crossings.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A fair number of blowdowns scattered over the entire loop. Some were duckunders and some were walk-arounds. There probably hasn't been any trail maintenance yet this season.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies were ferocious, especially close to running water. But pretty much everywhere to one degree or another. For some reason they avoided the Royalston Falls Shelter so that proved to be a refuge. When it got dark the black flies went to bed anyway. They were up again by about 7:30 in the morning. DEET helped a little but with all the sweating we were doing it washed away quickly.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: A pair of boots were left on the trail near a road crossing. They looked like they were placed there fairly recently. We left them.

Comments
Comments: "The Full Tully". We did the entire loop (counter-clockwise)over two days, and then some. We used the 2008 AMC "Best Backpacking in New England" book as a reference but the route has apparently changed in a few places since then. We had no trouble if we followed yellow blazes, however; except towards the end we mistakenly followed the blazes the wrong way around Tully Lake which brought us back to the car, but the long way around. It added a mile or so to the day. The Royalston Falls shelter was a nice accommodation and in pretty good shape. The water in the brook there is tannin-stained and tasted a little strange even after filtering but was wet enough. It appeared that parts of the loop are little traveled but the yellow blazes were usually well placed and frequent. Saw only one family of mountain bikers on Sunday and two young guys on the summit of Tully Mountain. That is it, we had the trail to ourselves other than that. Thanks to Lone Wolf for a great hike.
