Met a group of three in the parking lot, so we four did the route together. Trail to West Peak had been beaten out a day or two prior, with 4" loose snow in the track down low and the track filled in above the shelter, but with a good base.
From West to East Peak it was untouched snowpack. The ladder pitch was filled in, we punched it out on the return. The saddle was essentially scoured. The AT route up East peak was mostly thin bare ice with some spots of snow. We elected to stay in snowshoes for timesavings as it was about zero F and 30-40-ish winds with blowing snow and higher gusts. We moved about 40 yards south of the normal track to go up mostly snow ramps. Having an axe in hand helped when a gust hit. Thanks Dan, Mark and Dave for a fun hike. |
