Nighttime hike to beat the incoming storm. Started at 7pm. The frozen snow berm blocking the logging road was high and steep enough that we didn't attempt to get our vehicle over it, given the hour and 4F temperature, so we walked from there, darkness and faded memories contributing to a few wrong turns. The road was sledded flat with packed powder over ice. We wore microspikes past the summer road end until the road narrows to a track, then switched to snowshoes as the moose had really chewed up the track. Kept snowshoes on until returning to the summer road end. Picked up previous party's snowshoe track remnants here and there on the boundary swath and again part way up the 'whack up the fall line taking us directly to the canister, or would have if we hadn't deviated from them when we first reached the summit plateau. |
