Trails
Trails: Caribou Trail, Mud Brook Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, April 6, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Road to trailhead is still snowed in so there is a .5 mile snowy road walk to get to the trailhead. There are 2 cleared areas just down from Pooh Corner Farm with room for 8+ cars but the road beyond Pooh Corner is quite muddy so some may wish to park across from the farm an walk the extra tenth of a mile.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Smaller Crossings snow bridged, 2 larger crossing have open water but easy to step across.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of easy step overs, a couple of easy duck unders and leaners. There is one large blowdown in about .5 miles from where you exit the road that has damaged a section of bog bridges but an easy get around.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: A great canine adventure - saw more dogs out today (6) than people (4)
Bugs

Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Lost a glove probably at the summit when I was swapping out to a dry pair.

Comments
Comments: From side off Route 2 - heading west from Bethel go 5-6 miles until you see sign for Pooh Corner Farm - turn left off 2 and go 2.5 miles to Pooh Farm - parking just beyond. Looking for something sheltered but forgot how windy the summit can get - sunny but a chilly 30 MPH wind at the summit required layers but still amazing 360 degree views. Could see the snow blowing off the summit of Washington. Still snow on trails all the way. Caribou nicely packed out with only a few wet and sticky bits. Easy going to Mud Brook Junction. From there loose snow under a crust - boots worked but you'll sink several inches into the snow each step and occasionally deeper - more consolidated as you get closer to the summit though I did manage to post hole right at the top trying to get up the last few steps to the summit. Boots fine but may want light traction for extra bite heading up and down the steeper parts - all parties wearing microspikes and I wore my hillsounds.
