Water Crossing Notes: Sandy River is crossed on a bridge. Otherwise there were no major crossings

Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail in good condition except for deteriorating bog bridges especially in the muddy areas near the ponds

Dog-Related Notes: Did not see any. The open ridge area for about 3 miles has very little water with lots of sun exposure.

Bugs: Occasional pesky horse flies

Comments
Comments: The AT is in good condition except a few spots of rough footing and mud near the three ponds.
Hike includes the Piazza Rock, three nice ponds, and extensive open ridge hiking.
Many hikers on the trail including AT thru hikers. Saw international hikers (New Zealand, Germany, and Quebec), national hikers (CA, GA, MD, and PA), and regional hikers (ME, NH, MA, CT, and RI).
Notices posted at the trailhead concerning the lost AT hiker. Everyone was on alert for the hiker. Saw search and rescue personnel on Saddleback and a helicopter was patrolling the skies.
