Trails
Trails: Marston Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, July 3, 2016
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The parking lot is small--maybe 12 cars. There is no parking on the road as it is too narrow to accommodate parked cars. There is a well maintained porta potty alongside the parking lot.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Small streams that can be hopped with no problem.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are 3 trees down over the trail in the top mile or so. Also near the top mile or so, the tips of the branches of the fir trees need to be trimmed back as the trail has become narrow and you are pushing through the branches while walking. The trail is still easy to follow in terms of navigation, but arms (and legs if wearing shorts) get a bit scratched up.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: We did not see any.
Bugs
Bugs: The usual mosquitos and black flies. They tend to gather if you stop moving while in an area with still air. Also, the parking lot in late afternoon was full of them and we rushed to get inside the car.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: A big thank you to the hiker who found my dropped sunglasses and left them at the registration box at the beginning of the trail.

Comments
Comments: This is a really interesting trail because it is constantly changing. It starts in deep woods, and changes to a bright moss green elfin wonderland, to big rocks, to sandy ground with flat river rocks, to a white granite wonderland, to an alpine zone, and finally to a sharp granite rock bald summit with beautiful 360 degree views.

Always stop in at the visitors center at the entrance to Baxter State Park to get the weather/wind forecast at the top of the mountains. Although weather on the ground was a very comfortable warm and breezy, we were warned of 50 mph winds at the top on the day we hiked. Fortunately we were prepared with long sleeve shirts and windbreakers, though the wind and resulting temperature drop made our summit stay a relatively short one at less than 20 minutes.
