Comments
Comments: Trails were mostly dry with a few minor areas of mud. Some of the steeper ski trails are not yet mowed, but much of the rest are.
I beelined up the ski trails from the Barker base area to the top of the Locke Mountain complex, which I believe to be the highpoint of Barker Mountain (a ledge adjacent to a tower, above the Locke Mountain chairlift). The Sunday River hiking map suggests the Barker Mountain ski complex is the highpoint, but the USGS suggests the Locke Mountain complex.
Once on the ridge, I took the Summit Traverse hiking trail (a combination of single track and some access road) over to the top of the White Cap complex, then back over Locke and to the Barker Mountain complex. Very nice ridge walk with plenty of ledge views.
From Barker, I descended on the work road, making a detour to the Spruce complex, then winding my way down to the Barker base.
Most leaves are still green, but some maple saplings were turning red. Fall in the air late in the afternoon.
