We used snowshoes the entire day and had to walk in from the beginning of Stratton Bk Pond Rd. Fire Wardens Tr was easy to follow and broken by someone just ahead of us. The steep section towards the Col started to get slick after a few passes of snowshoes and might require some additional traction in the coming days.
Above the Col we encountered pretty high winds and snow drifts up waist deep. On top of Avery it was mostly hardened snow/ice, which was manageable with snowshoes. We ended up breaking trail up the West Peak, which had substantial snow drifts around 4 ft. Although it was a tough day, the views were clear and well worth the effort.
Total milage was 13.75 and took us 8 hrs, including the hike down Stratton Bk Pond Rd. |
