Did this one with Monica, Colin, Suzanne, Steve, Ron, and Sarah. It took us two attempts - unsuccessful on 12/27, successful on 12/28.
On the first attempt we entered from the south east and tried to take a shortcut from the logging road along the 2,000 foot contour line to the spur trail to the summit. Took a bad line and got stuck fighting through thick growth, deep snow, and a gully. It was cold and was dark when arrived at the spur trail (we started at 1:00 PM when we arrived in the area) so we decided to abort the trip and head back to the cars. We followed the logging roads that were nicely packed down from snow mobile traffic and the snow shoes of another group that aborted their attempt earlier in the day.
On our successful attempt we again entered from the south east and made the necessary corrections so that the shortcut from the logging road to the spur trail was followed correctly. We got to the spot about 0.3 miles below the summit where the other group the day before had turned around and were glad that we didn't try to finish in the dark - it was a maze of steep trail breaking. It was brutally cold on the way up but it was "pleasant" at the summit. The trip down was uneventful. |
