After a nice breakfast in East Millinocket we headed off for Kingfield and I got to seem some of the finer places of interior Maine. Skied from Rapid Stream road parking (no logging this year so access is 3-4 miles back from last year) to the Fire Wardens TH. There was a skier who had headed up but quick early in their ascent. Breakable crust sinking in 2-4 inches. At the next road crossing other skiers had been up but they do not pack trail like snowshoes and we would have regular packing and then a 6-8" surprise every so often. The next skiers quit on the long ascent up to the slide but just as well there was no snow and a nice coating of ice. We had micros but both agreed crampons would have been "better" Summit-ed Abram at 3pm and headed down. Sorry for making Wayne miss the game, but then he would have missed all the fun. |
