Comments
Comments: we followed the wassataquoik lake trail to a swamp just short of center pond. we started our bushwhack just south of the swamp aiming to stay north of bald and contour around towards its col with mullen. there were some tight evergreens around the swamp then we had pretty good mixed woods on the hike around bald. rather than heading up to the col we took a direct line on mullen once we reached about 2600-2700 feet and started climbing. the woods were scrappy, but continued to be surprisingly decent. about 150 feet short of the summit we hit some tighter growth along with rough footing, large rocks and holes to navigate to treeline. from there open rock led up to the summit. phenomenal views in all directions. leaving the summit we picked our way down the first couple hundred feet then had more decent going towards the col with bald. nearing the col we hit a long section of tighter "jail bar" type spruce which persisted until the ascent of bald when it relented a bit to the summit. some nice directional views back to mullen and up to fort and brother. we opted not to drop direct west off bald, but headed more to the north/northeast to roughly intersect the line we used on the way in with success. pretty good woods off that side of bald before we turned west and made our way back to the wassataquoik lake trail. it took us about 12 hours to complete the hike. overall this proved to be a good route though the substantial amount of distance off trail makes for a long day.
