Peaks Saddleback Mountain - The Horn, ME
Trails
Trails: Berry Pickers Trail, Appalachian Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, August 12, 2018
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: For detailed directions see: https://www.northeasthikes.com/hike-saddleback-mountain-maine-berry-pickers-trail/. Definitely need high clearance vehicle to get to the trailhead - rocks to negotiate around and still have the collapsed culvert to get over. The bridge right before the trailhead is passable - keep to the right on the way in to stay on the boards to avoid the hole. The boards are shifting a bit so be sure to take a look before crossing.

Comments
Comments: Directions in link above. Second time on the trail and berry pickers is quickly becoming a favorite. To access follow the road from the parking area .9 miles to a junction and turn left onto another road which at this point is a part of the Flyrod Crosby trail - berry pickers trailhead is a little more than 0.5 miles down the road on the right and is signed. Trail is well blazed and easy to follow its entire length. Berry pickers trail through the woods still has its nice soft footbed - moderate grades with a few steeper spots. There is a nice little waterfall 1/10 of a mile in. Ledges were nice and dry and provided great views today. Once above the erratic where you head back into the woods, the trail does become wet and muddy. AT heading over to the horn had stretches of mud and/or water but there were strategically placed rocks and branches to help avoid the worst of it. The word about berry pickers is getting out - The trail was actually (kind of) busy today - met two people coming down, met another on the Horn that had come up the berry pickers and we met a nice couple that hiked up to the ledges. Also met a young moose as we left the ledges heading back down. Definitely worth a visit but bring your high clearance vehicle to get there.
