Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Watch for the street sign for Stratton Brook Pond Road at 3.2 miles north of Sugarloaf entrance on route 27. The dirt road was in good condition. Ignore the sign at about 1 mile on the road prohibiting motor vehicles as it applies only during the snow season. There are a few small parking areas near the information board at the end of the good section of road. A more primitive road continues further to the Stratton Brook Pond outlet but it gets quite rough nears its end.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Easy crossing of Stratton Brook Pond outlet on a "bridge" of rocks. No other significant water crossings.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in excellent condition. Considering two bridges on route 27 had to be replaced after Irene it was amazing there was very little damage on the trails. There was limited erosion on the AT on the ridge west of West Peak. Some broken bog bridges on the Fire Warden's Trail below the steep section.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Good for dogs that are used to steep trails. There were many water sources (many signed)
Bugs
Bugs: The flies were quite bothersome especially down low. Some mosquitoes.

Comments
Comments: The MATC has maintained the trails well. There was a MATC trail crew out today on the Horns Pond Trail.

The Firewarden's Trail is a rock staircase for a considerable stretch in the steep section. There are also rock steps in the steepest section of the At between Horns Pond and the Horns. Additional rock work has been and is being placed on the Horns Pond Trail. All this work by the MATC paid off when Irene struck. The trails also benefitted from no significant rivers crossing or abutting the trails.

Great views of Flagstaff Lake from all four peaks on Mt Bigelow.

I met the Bryant Pond ME 4H Club on the ridge as well as many other hikers.
