Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All good, some slick rocks.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Saw a trail crew headed in while I was eating breakfast in the parking lot, destination, Mt. Coe Trail. I ended up being passed by several more of the crew, running into the bulk of them on the section at the bottom of the slide. Ran into two others just below the summit of Coe working the section above the slide. The Mt. Coe Trail should be well brushed out now. One nuisance blowdown (climb over), and an easy step over between Coe and South Brother. Upper Marston has some eroded sections.

Dog-Related Notes:

Bugs: Like the day before, they were around, but not bothersome at all.

Comments
Comments: Decision making has never been one of my strong suites, today, decisions turned out in my favor. After yesterdays afternoon adventure on Doubletop (which kind of beat me up), I was off to tackle Coe and the Brothers. Got a later start than planned (8am), and found the lower part of the Marston Trail very nice, but found the steeper parts hard on my fatigued legs. That and being passed by the trail crew, a bit demoralizing. Winds were gusty, and cool. The Mt. Coe Trail was a bit brushy headed up towards the slide, but I'm sure the crew has put a stop to that. The slide was super fun, and today, very dry. Only a few seeps here and there. Wind kept gusting, pushing me a bit at times. The brush returned above the slide, though the two man crew was up here clearing it out, they weren't relishing the idea of having to go down the slide. The summit of Coe is spectacular, I found a spot overlooking the Klondike and Katahdin and took a break. Over to South Brother, the trail has you going mostly downward, and only starts climbing again shortly before the spur to South Brother. It's pretty soft, but well maintained, even though it doesn't appear to get a whole lot of use. The spur to South Brother is steep, rough, and rocky for the most part, excepting the first 30-40 yards. Spectacular views again from the flat summit. Winds quite gusty at this point, so down I went. Decided to skip North Brother, since I have to go there to get to Fort, and my legs wanted nothing to do with more climbing. Checked out the neat pond below the col. Things clouded up the further I descended, and I made decent time through the steeps and flats along the way. Popped out at the trailhead at 1:45, and drove up to Ledge Falls. Sat around eating lunch while kids slid down the natural waterslides. Just as I returned to my car to head back to the lean-to, the sky opened up, and it rained off and on for the next hour. Looks like it pays to get off the mountain early. Thanks for another great trip Baxter!
