Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Many many water crossings on this loop; some were daunting but most were rock-hoppable with big jumps; no need to keep feet dry because the mud pits soaked most everything!!!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Wilderness area was obstacle course of blow-downs. Almost no blazes anywhere!!! I didn't have all that much trouble following East Branch Tr, but, you have to be really careful - if you stop and look around, it looks like there's no trail at all!!! VERY obscure in places!!!! Got lost at the junction with East Branch Road - no signage anywhere from the trail how where it hits the road, so, I followed the old trail southbound until I said, "This CANNOT be the trail!!!!!" Turned around, headed up a logging road and found the real road. NOTE: East Branch Road has a washout that is fine to hike across. Of course, there has not been much traffic in this area since that road is still impassable as is Slippery Brook Road since Hurricane Irene. Later, where the Bald Land Trail hits the col between Black Mountain and Doublehead, I found the signs confusing. I thought the trail was the scenic vista and followed THAT logging road into obscurity. As the sun was setting, I pulled out my GPS for some insight... the XC trail WAS the Bald LAnd Trail... who knew?????
Dog-Related Notes

Comments
Comments: Great t-shirt/shorts day for this warm hike!!! Awesome views thru the trees!!! Didn't see anyone at all. Occasional stretches runnable, but, much of this hike was rock-hopping, even on the flat stretches because so much was boggy. Saw a few moose footprints and startled a few grouse! Ended with a headlamp the last hour+ first time this year!!!
