Comments
Comments: Valley Way was in great shape (thanks guys!) until about a mile from hut. Under an inch of light powder at trailhead up to about four inches higher up. Upper section completely drifted in. Shortly after leaving hut switched into microspikes. Had to pick steps carefully. Drifted snow between rocks had potential for leg traps. Visibility was poor. Windy atop Madison, maybe 30 mph. Back down to hut and onto Star Lake. It was well sheltered from the wind. Everything up top is a mix of rime covered rock, hardpack, and drifts. No single footwear was right for long. Switched between spikes and snowshoes throughout the day. Was windy on Adams, but maybe only 20-25 mph. Sun occasionally tried to show itself, but never succeeded. Went down to Thunderstorm Jct and headed toward Jefferson. Everything today was white. I went about a half mile. The light was really flat and the fog just wouldn't quit. After several long periods of near whiteout, I decided Jefferson could wait for another day. Headed back to the hut and down Valley Way. It is in good shape again up top. Several guys in lot had planned to do Adams via Airline, but never saw them up top. When I got down their cars were gone. I went over to check Airline. The lower section looks like they pummeled it barebooting. Not sure how far up they went.
