Larry and I were going to do the Hancocks, but bailed when we saw low single digit temps and howling winds at the Hancocks parking area (which was plowed out, by the way). We hiked the Hancocks on a COLD day (-15F with strong winds on S. Hancock) a few years ago and did not want a repeat performance. Were also concerned with major trail breaking up high due to drifting snow. Mt. Pemi was a nice second choice. Trail was nicely packed out except for some drifting up high. We wore snowshoes, but Microspikes would have worked, too. It was windy at times, but quite easy overall. Nice views, except for clouds shrouding the tops of the high summits. |
