Started out on the Flat mountain pond tr with microspikes and switched to snowshoes just after the McCrillis tr. Snowshoes are defiantly necessary as the snow is soft and still fairly deep. Route finding to the pond was straight forward even though it looked like it had been a bit since anyone had been that way. I turned around at the east lookout point and backtracked a couple of hundred yards. I bushwhacked on a magnetic south heading though fairly open woods. I came right up to the canister. The only entry before mine was last September when the canister was replaced. Could probably use a note books or at least more paper, if anyone is headed up. There were some decent views from the summit that probably don’t exist in the summer. I followed my tracks back to the McCrillis trail and decided to head up Whiteface. I was following a couple who missed the trail several times, but always rejoined it. I followed them until I passed them. Route finding was quite hard as it does not look like this trail got much use this past winter. A fair amount of blowdowns and very few blazes added to the challenge. On the decent, I was able to stay on route with one small exception. Follow the decent steps if you are up there. |
