|
 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parked at Basin parking lot, plowed with plenty of space |
|
 | Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow - Spring Snow |
|
 | Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes |
|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Major crossing is bridged though with softening snow and these higher temps it may not hold for long, other stream crossings all open but easily crossed |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
A couple of major blowdowns - one has an established path around it, the other requires serious ducking or crawling. There is a tree one needs to duck under right below the liberty springs tentsite - be cautious since there is a fairly thick branch right at eye level pointed right down the trail |

Snow was initially hard packed down low when
I started but started softening up as the temps climbed. Down low there are a fair number of base spots and all smaller stream crossing are open. Fairly solid pack until the transition to conifers when it became packed with powder on top - some shallow postholing on this stretch up to the Franconia Ridge trail and this section is pretty chewed up , soft powder on hard base on FRT to the summit. Coming down in the afternoon, the snow was becoming wet and sticky even fairly high up (on sections where trail was in the sun). Wet and sticky snow all the way from where trees transitioned back to hardwoods to bike path. Took bushwack back to basin parking lot - I missed it going out but easy to find coming back. For those looking to take the bushwack up to Liberty Springs trail, the path I and others had taken begins about a quarter of mile from the basin parking lot down the bike path at a point where the stream approaches close to the bike path, look for two sets of foot tracks about 5-10 yards apart on the left - both lead to a log which can be used to cross the stream. Once across the stream it is easily followed up to the curve on the Liberty Springs trail. Lots of Traffic - saw more than 20 people on the trail fairly evenly split between bare boots, light traction, and snowshoes |
