Comments
Comments: Unfortunately we ended up ascending, by mistake, the steep gully trail that we were advised by several other trip reports done by others to avoid. We followed the Ammo trail to start with quite easily as the trail was very well packed out and easy to follow. Some blue markers were even visible on the trees right up to the gem pool area. On our descent it was easy to see the point and place we went wrong. All trails were packed out and after the gem pool area we followed the one that continued on in front of us instead of the one that veered left. At that point the trail Y's off and the more difficult ascent first drops down into a small knoll and then immediately shoots back up in a vertical pitch. We had our snowshoes on to start with, but once we started to climb the vertical sections we had to switch out of the snowshoes. The path was too narrow and difficult to dig in your toes for traction while wearing the snowshoes. I put on my micro spikes and Russ bare booted so he could kick in some steps as he went along. The snow near the hut was pretty hard packed and easy to walk on. Russ continued to bare boot until his descent from Monroe at which point he put his micro spikes on. We continued to wear micro spikes until we were back at the gem pool. At that point it was warm out and the snow was soft. We post holed left and right so we then put our snowshoes back on for the remainder of the trip. We did not take the steep gully trail back down, but instead found the proper Ammo trail out.
