avalon trail had wet tracked out snow over a solid base. not sure when this new layer of snow fell. a-z much of the same to the tom spur though not as heavily tracked and was a bit loose in places. i dropped maybe a couple hundred yards down a-z trail with a few inches of wet snow over the existing track then started bushwacking roughly south towards west field hoping to drop down near the col between it and field. the woods were scrappy for a couple of tenths then opened up as i slabbed around, slowly dropping elevation. the woods had about 6-8 inches of mashed potato snow over a pretty solid base. i ended up dropping a bit below where i planned, but headed up the peak in open woods with just a couple thicker spots before the recognized high point. returned the same way.
i wore snowshoes the whole hike.
great hike that combined a much needed cardio push heading up to willey range with a nice bushwack. some occasional views into the pemi and a nice look to the rugged west side of mt. field from some drifted spruce up near the summit. still lots of snow up there. great to be out.
