What I thought would be a good easy 4000-footer to begin my season ended up having its challenges. The first 2/3s of the way up Starr King were amazing, especially on a such a warm spring day! Once we hit that 2/3s mark, though, things got a little more tricky. There was melting snow and ice on the remainder of the trail. Luckily we brought our microspikes and mini crampons. At this point, they were a must. There were a few parts that would have been close to impossible to get past without them.
The top of Mt Starr King had some nice views of the presidentials and a nice spot to sit and eat lunch. The hike from the peak of Starr King to the peak of Waumbek and back was probably the most frustrating part of the hike, with a lost of post holes and loose snow.
The trip down was a bit tricky for the first bit where there is ice but after that it was a breeze. As long as you have microspikes or crampons this is a great hike! Otherwise, I would give it another week or two to melt some more. |
