Comments
Comments: Second south-to-north solo Presi traverse in past two weeks, but this time perfect spring weather, with sunny skies, only a light breeze, and temperatures in the 60s to 70s. Snow with solid rail for about a mile below Pierce, and sporadic 2-3 ft soft snow with minor post-holing in the trees between Pierce and Ike. Most of Crawford Path and Gulfside above tree line dry or rock-hoppable over puddles. Took advice to avoid Valley Way, so bailed on Madison by hiking directly to Appalachia on Airline, which had a decent solid rail in 2-3 ft soft snow below about 3500 ft and some soft ice patches down to about 3000 ft. Snowshoes or traction devices would not have been worth their weight to carry. Talked to State Parks personnel preparing summit building for opening this coming weekend and to three skiers earning their turns in Pipeline Gully just north of Washington below the Gulfside Trail.
