Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, May 10, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: not sure where one would park for old mountain road off Burliegh Road, you can drive a bit down the trail to some water station?? or one very rough rutted space near junction. Note: Burliegh road is the only publically (as opposed to private road/land) driveable road in that area, despite what google and amc maps might lead you to believe.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: none other than trickles-- good choice for melt, high water season
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: 3-4 good size blowdowns blocking Crawford Ridgepole trail within first mile heading south after junction of mt. morgan, maybe 8-12 inch diameters
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: no one jumped into my crotch for once on a hike, nice break!
Bugs
Bugs: Picked up one dog tick, likely on already grassy Old Mountain Road, black flies are out so I DEETED up at trailhead and was fine

Comments
Comments: Made this a loop run/hike with a "running shoe" spot drop off at Old Mountain Road (stashed road runners and extra water in woods to save tread on trail runners). Note parking notes for private roads issue.

Trails mostly dry despite rain at night.

Leaves are out and vivid green down low on Mt. Morgan trail, many flowers out including some painted trillium, yellow buttercup like thing, and many sections of hobblebush in white flower bloom. After turning left along Crawford Ridgepole where it was like walking through a rhododendron forest Last of the Mohicans style(except hobblebush). The segment along ridge had lots and lots of fresh moose poop, some bear scat and strong smell--it was like a trip to the animal fair. Summer like cobwebs in face too on this lesser traveled segment. Three very nice viewpoints in the vicinity of Mt. Webster, 2 on outcrops, one right on trail. Unique perspective on squam lake and Winnipesauke behind. Ok for running, but some mossy rocks, blowdowns slowed me down till Webster, but became awesome downhill running after that with nice mostly dirt footbed at easy grades. The 3.1 mile road run back was actually enjoyable, passing many farms and squam lake's shore, not too hilly, just a few hundred vertical uphill at end.

Whole loop with roads is about 10 miles 1700 gain. 2.5 hrs elapsed today.
