Comments
Comments: Repeating a few things from the earlier post - Avalon trail was hard packed to spur path for Avalon. However before the col, the most noticeable path seems to diverge from the actual summer trail and ended up on top of the knoll across the col from Avalon. It's been a couple of years, but I don't recall the trail heading up this way - though you do get some good views of Avalon across the col. If you follow this track take a left and follow the packed track right before the top (past the top the paths just end in the trees)- this leads down into the col at the point of the Avalon spur. From Avalon up to field the trail was not broken out. Broke out the trail or at least a path (saw a couple of blazes down low but other than that followed depressions and openings in the trees) - up to Field dealt with hard crust with lots of powder underneath (Snowshoes definitely needed). On the way, 2 gentleman joined me and we broke out the path - followed what looked like the trail though we did wander through some trees on the way up. Thus we spent some time on what was probably the actual trail and time bushwacking, especially right below the summit of Field. The path we took ended up right below the summit of Field where you head up the brief steep pitch. Met a party on Field which from prior report sounds like they headed down to Avalon so there should be a pretty obvious track now, thought it might be a bit soft. Took Willey Ridge Trail from Field - From Field to Tom Col solid track to follow which loosely follows summer trail - A few stretches where you need to push through the trees. The path intersects the AZ right at the sign for the Tom spur. AZ down to Avalon solidly packed. Used light traction to Avalon spur, snowshoes up over Field to AZ junction and down to Avalon junction, back to light traction down Avalon to highland center.
