Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No big crossings on this loop. The smaller ones were all easy with dry feet. The final couple on the way down Kelley Trail have nice rockwork!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few new blowdowns (or drag-downs from recent heavy snow). We cut out all the side-branches on a few so that they were just step-overs, but others remain.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw one today who seemed to be doing great. Some may have trouble on the ledges on Walden Trail just west of "Four Way" junction.
Bugs
Bugs: Amazingly, we saw none all the way around this loop till we got to Kelley Trail, where we purposely put ourselves in a deep gully with lots of running water. Our bad. That being said, they weren't even biting there, just flying around us.

Comments
Comments: Although Ferncroft was packed, we only saw 5 people all day on this loop. Wonderful views, good footbed and lots of new trails for both of us. Wonalancet Range Trail was beautiful and the ledges offered great views as we lazed in the sun. The trip over Wonalancet Hedgehog was just lovely (more stops for hanging out in the sun as the eastern view). There are a couple challenging spots between there and "Four Way" junction - steep and wet. Kelley Trail was an interesting treat - the top couple tenths were kinda cruddy - dry brook bed with a foot of fallen beech leaves so that every step was an adventure. Once we got past that, though, and found actual water, then WOW - very interesting rock formations, waterfalls, rapids, chutes, etc... Only disappointment was that we reached the biggest of the waterfalls, but there was no way to get into position for a photo. :-(

We also got about a 0.6-mile extra walk in at the end as we MISSED a turnoff for the Kelley Trail when it left the old jeep road and went back into the woods. Ended up over on Old Mast, so turned around and came back looking for it. Found it easily that time.
