west branch road is in good shape as was railroad spur road up to where i parked just uphill from its crossing of clear stream. at this point railroad spur road turns left becoming an atv only road and the road ahead i assume leads to the access road to the wind farm on kelsey mountain. |

black flies were pretty obnoxious on the ascent and while standing still. |

i walked the road for about 100 yards then turned off into some grown in logging cuts heading straight for the summit with its wind tower visible (and audible) above the trees. woods were generally open and nice and i ascended through some older cuts and along moose paths crossing a couple boundary cuts along the way. closer to the top the woods thickened a bit with some mossy rock scrambling and hidden holes to watch out for before reaching the summit area which has since been flattened and is home to a wind turnbine. i was a bit surprised to find no signage or anything to stop me from walking right up to the tower, but i guess they probably aren't thinking about people bushwacking up. i didn't push my luck as there was clearly someone working in the tower and i dón't know what the reaction to someone nosing around might be so i headed back down finding some more difficult woods initially, but eventually getting back on the same nice line back to the road.
this was the first of a couple planned hikes. some real nice bushwacking up kelsey though sort of surreal to top out underneath such a giant piece of machinery. some limited views in spots back to dixville and a bit of a breeze to keep things somewhat cool. then it was off to dixville.
