Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Starr King, Mt. Waumbek, NH
Trails
Trails: Starr King Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, June 1, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The lot was full, 14 cars including mine, when I returned at 11:35. There is a tree hanging over the entrance to the parking lot about 6 feet from the ground. If you have a larger truck or SUV you will need a saw.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No major crossings.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There were two big limbs down 50 yds from the parking lot and several others along the lower portion of Starr King Tr. I was able to remove all without tools except for the first two large ones which I was able to break back enough to avoid going too far off course. Stripped Maple isn't very strong. I only traveled 1/4 north on the Kilkenny Ridge Tr but from what I saw it was brushy in spots and has a few blowdowns.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Easy dog hike. Lots of water ascending Starr King but then none along the ridge. Marlie got to lead on the way up as we had an early start.
Bugs
Bugs: Mostly mosquitoes. They were manageable if I kept moving. I didn't bother with bug spray.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: More tid bits of trash and a stick of lip balm.

Comments
Comments: Started early to finish early and beat the heat. The trail is in decent shape with some mud closer to the start. All mud was manageable if you stayed on the rocks. We went about 1/4 mile north along the Kilkenny Ridge Tr to look for some views north from a ledgy hump. Cabot and The Horn could be seen but it was hazy. From Waumbek I could barely make out the ridge line of Madison and Adams. It was nice to chat with another man that was finishing off his June grid. This hike completed my 5th round of NH4Ks. Hooray!
