Comments
Comments: i headed up the woods road following it along waterhole brook as it became overgrown and started to fade out. i crossed the brook and picked up a couple different grassy old roads which were very wet so left the road idea behind and bushwacked up through good woods filled with hobblebush to start picking up the ridgline that split the drainage. a bit higher up i came upon a nice road that wound its way up the ridgeline (not realizing then it was the upper part of one of the lower wet roads). i stuck with it until it went well of my bearing and continued up through thicker fir/spruce woods that were quite wet this morning. some moose paths helped out and i started to favor a line more towards the west peak of long mountain. once up on the main ridge the going was scrappy until the ascent of west long itself when the everything opened up into beautiful fern woods up to the highpoint. a really beautiful summit.

from there i headed towards long mountain pond going over an intermediate bump along the way. woods were a mix of open going and scruffier fir and spruce. i almost walked by the pond staying up to high in the col, but corrected over to it through some thick growth. from the pond i was able to mostly follow moose paths up to the middle summit of long. some real nice walking with open woods nearly the entire way. another nice summit. i decided to try and pick up my ascent line on the north facing ridge for the descent so headed that way from middle long with mostly ok woods and some great moose trails. once back on the ridge i picked up the same old road, but stayed with it farther down ending up back where i had crossed waterhole brook earlier in the day.

a great day on a nice mountain. got an early start in case of afternoon storms, but found that the weather only improved as the day went on. a couple stretches of dark clouds came through, but no rain. i had looked at a couple possible ascent routes and ended up pretty happy with the one i went with. quite the network of old roads and moose trails up there to take advantage of. spooked a mother and baby moose up on west long as i approached. wasn't able to get a picture, but the image of them in profile moving down off the peak through the open fern woods is one i will remember. got done earlier than i had planned so drove up trio ponds road to little bog pond. a beautiful spot. great day to finish the nh100 highest.
