Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Several water crossings were easily negotiated by rock hopping and very shallow wading in spite of the recent rains.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Bennett Street Trail looks like it has been recently cleared and was fine all the way to the top of Sandwich Dome. Some upper sections of the trail follow old logging skid roads that were used to drag the timber down to the railroad loading yards along what is now the Flat Mountain Pond Trail. Gleason Trail was our route down and it has seen no maintenance for sometime. There were many downed tress uphill (North) from the Flat Mountain Pond Trail that required a high crawl or reroute to negotiate. This would make for a nice trail for someone interested in starting bushwhacking!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Light rain today and there were no signs of ANY bugs in spite of not using bug spray.

Comments
Comments: I love hiking this area in all seasons. The stream along the Bennett Street Trail has numerous cascades and one nice waterfall known as Great Falls. After many years of hiking past Sandwich Mountain I decided this rainy day would be the day to hike it. The Bennett Street trail north of the Flat Mountain Pond Trail was awesome! The forest floor is covered with Moose scat and Spruce saplings. The Spruce trees smelled great and are the sign of the forest transitioning from a hardwood forest to the Spruce forest that once made these woods so valuable to the lumber barons.
