Trails: Carlton Notch Trail, Castleview Loop, Mt. Crescent Trail, Crescent Ridge Trail, Underhill Path, Four Soldiers Path, Pasture Trail, Grassy Lane
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, August 4, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking is at a dirt area in front of a gate by the Jimtown logging road. There is currently no signage at this site that indicates it is for trailhead parking. The trailhead for Carlton Notch Trail is 0.1 miles back down Randolph Hill Road with a small sign "Path" with no indication that this is the start of the Carlton Notch Trail. I think there is supposed to be further development at this trailhead to connect to the Cook Path and the Mt Crescent Trail whereupon I would expect the signage to be improved.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Significant, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No major crossings
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails generally in good shape except for some wet areas and overgrown vegetation hiding the pathways. Many of the bog bridges were very slippery with some out of kilter or broken. One log of a bridge near the Four Soldiers Road was broken.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw no dogs on the trails today because I saw no other hikers. The trails should be fine for dogs but anticipate they will be muddy.
Bugs
Bugs: Almost none.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: On the Underhill Path I found a grounded party balloon. I deflated it and carried it out.

Comments
Comments: It was a wet hike today. Got caught in a thunderstorm on the Four Soldiers Path. Unfortunately low clouds on the Northern Presidential Range downgraded the views from Castleview Ledge, Castleview Rock, south and north outlooks of Crescent Mountain. There were many grown over areas on the Underhill Path and the Four Soldiers Path that obscure the pathway and requires attentiveness not to stray. Also, many of the bog bridges were very slippery presumably from a slime. Lots of moose droppings but no sightings of the animal.
Pond of Safety had an uninterrupted tree lined shore. There was a loon diving for fish. Three people from Massachusetts were canoeing in the pond.
Saw many Indian Pipe, colorful mushrooms, lots of moss and ferns, Joe Pye Weed, and Butter and Eggs plus the usual roadside wildflowers on the side of the logging road.
