VERY beautiful woods road and woods, however, does pass through an ACTIVE logging area (even on a Saturday). Unfortunately, took Smith Mountain Trail instead for a good 25 minutes one way before running into the other 2 hikers from the other car in the lot who had turned around an HOUR after taking the wrong turn, too. The problem came at the fork where both trails split - there is a large trailer parked on the correct trail - that, combined with a confusing little arrow on the trail sign and I was off onto the wrong trail!!!
Trail is well-worth the hike - so pretty!!!! Rocks near top are very slippery tho. Tower is, unfortunately, looking unmaintained!!! At least one guy wire had snapped and several glass windows had been broken - it was exciting being in there in the gusty wind!!!!
Friendly NOBO's at the summit - a fine morning!!!!! |
