Trails: Moat Mountain Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, August 11, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of parking at Diana's Bath parking area early but cars were lined up the street when we returned. South end parking lot was full at end of the hike too but no overflow.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Crossing for Moat Mtn Trail was easy rock hop. Red Ridge Trail crossing was also a rock hop for those interested in doing the loop
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in relatively good shape. Minor running water on some of the ledges going up North and coming down South which should be avoided as those areas are very slippery. Some of the painted blazes on the open ledges are difficult to see so care is needed to stay on trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Several dogs on the trail today. Water is scarce from North Moat summit to parking near south end so one needs to carry plenty of water. Still some minor running water on trail heading up after Friday's rain but likely will dry up soon. Some challenging short scrambles for the pooch but it seems the dogs handled them without issue.
Bugs
Bugs: Few buzzing mosquitoes last mile but not really an biting issue.

Comments
Comments: Absolutely magnificent hike. Some of the finest viewing peaks in the Whites. I rank the views up there with the Bonds, Franconia Ridge, N Presidentials. Great ridge walk with views especially from Middle to South. Still lots of blueberries along the trail. N Moat is barely a 3K peak but there is plenty of elevation gain. Certainly not the cake walk one would think when looking at the maps. Has many of NH 4K peaks beat in every respect. If you haven't done the Moat traverse put it on your to do list. Not a hike for rainy, wet or low snow or ice day as there is a lot of relatively steep and smooth ledge which will get very slick.
