Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only real crossing (Blueberry Ledge Cutoff) was bridged.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Only maintenance issues had to do with some brushing needed here and there, Chiefly on the Wonalancet Range Trail, Walden Trail, and Blueberry Ledge Cutoff, all of which seem to be more lightly used than the other trails we were on today.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Friendly poodle greeted us at first house after the "Hikers Welcome" gate at end of Dicey's Mill Trail at the end of the day. Owner came out and said the dog never met a person he didn't like.
Bugs
Bugs: There were a few mosquitoes and gnats at the Ferncroft parking area, but I have seen much worse at that location.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: We found a paper White Mountain Guide book map on the trail from an edition of the book about 20 years old. It was wet but in good shape so I pocketed it and later hung it at the kiosk at the parking lot. It may have belonged to the lone hiker we passed a short time earlier. He would be better off buying a new edition anyway. It was really a chore to try to read.

Comments
Comments: We saw only the aforementioned lone man hiking and then later a family group of 4 heading up kind of late in the day. They were planning on camping someplace on the Whiteface ridge, maybe the Camp Rich clearing. They would probably get to a campsite around nightfall, depending on how much the Whiteface ledges slowed them down.
We originally were planning on doing only Passaconaway but after summitting there we decided to head over to Whiteface and then back down. Note to self: When doing Whiteface and Passaconaway in the same trip, do Whiteface first...Those ledges are real hairy to descend, better to do them going up. And the ascent of Nanamocomuck Peak (connected to Passaconaway) on the Walden Trail has to be one of the nastiest trails to ascend I have seen in a long time.
Overall, the views were almost nonexistent today due to low cloud cover but we are glad it did not rain, especially when we were descending the Whiteface ledges. Thanks to "Wounded Knee" Kergama for a great hike.
