Comments
Comments: i walked up the access road on the east side of the mountain to a logical point just above where a cross country ski trail leaves to the left and the road crosses back over the brook and took a direct bearing on the summit of black. nice open woods low with a fair amount of young beech still holding leaves. about 1000 vertical below the summit the going got steep and stayed that way with increasingly scrappy woods and some blowdown before moderating shortly below the summit. i decided to extend the hike and pick up the bootleg ski trail over to the north peak of loon. i headed down the south ridge of black and after a bit stumbled onto the trail. i soon lost it and ended up paralleling it to the east before getting back on and following it with no problem to just below the summit of north loon. short herd paths lead up onto the high point. nice walking down the ski trails following the route of the access road with the usual great views of the whites to the north.

a nice hike. some good woods followed by sporting grades on the western slopes of black. noted bear scat and tracks along the way. great afternoon.
