Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, November 30, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at the gate at the beginning of FR 17 (Slippery Brook Road), and walked it. One other car when I arrived, no others on my return.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Ice - Black, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only crossings of note were on Mountain Pond Loop. The outlet of the pond is quite wide, with big rocks that I'm sure would have been hoppable if they hadn't been covered in ice. An inlet brook further along the southern side of the pond was a tricky crossing as well.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few stepovers on Mountain Pond Loop. Many blowdowns of all varieties on Slippery Brook Trail (the trail portion anyway), there are no blazes that I saw, and the trail is somewhat obscure in spots, mostly the footbed.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:

Lost and Found
Lost and Found: A pair of faded jeans, hanging on a 6 foot tall stump, before the final climb to the Eastman/Baldface col.

Comments
Comments: Got these straggling trails out of the way, on this gorgeous Saturday. The roadwalk wasn't much fun, but it got me where I needed to be. Mountain Pond is a great spot, I'll definitely be returning. The other end of Slippery Brook Trail was pretty wild once it turned off the road, and required care to navigate, but I never felt like I was going to lose the trail. There were some short sections where traction would have been useful, but was able to bareboot all day. Great views from Eastman, then a long slog out, not a soul seen today.
