| Comments: |
We spotted a car at the trailhead parking area for the Elwell Trail, and another at the parking area off of Bear Mountain Road, to do a quick traverse of the Sugarloaves via the Elwell Trail.
Normally, we'll drive up the old Hebron Turnpike (an eroded Class VI road at best) to an area just below where it intersects with the Elwell Trail, and park there. Today, though, we could not leave a car up on the old Hebron Turnpike: some recent clearing of land right near its intersection with the Elwell Trail has obliterated a good section of the road, turning it into an impassable, muddy morass. So, we ended the hike with a short road walk back to Bear Mountain Road and the car.
However, beginning about three or four tenths of a mile below (north) of this muddy/impassable area, the road appears to have been recently graded, so that it's a reasonable drive now with a passenger car for much of the way. (This road also accesses the trailhead for the Bear Mountain Trail, and is in good shape up to about that trailhead.) |
