Peaks Flat Mountain Pond, NH
Trails
Trails: Flat Mountain Pond Trail, Bennett Street, Whiteface Intervale Road
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, December 7, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Only two other vehicles at the parking area of Whiteface Intervale; one at the Bennett Street parking. There should be no problem driving to either.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Ice - Blue
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Lots of them, almost all a bit tricky due to icy rocks or the threat thereof combined with collapsed or broken ice panels, but only one on the western half forced me to put on microspikes. I used dry rocks or rocks just a bit underwater. Pepper was more reluctant to use wet rocks and got wet paws several times, but that wasn't a problem on mostly snowless trails and mildish temps.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There were some blowdowns and debris scattered about, and a couple of places where water flowed down the trail cleaning out leaves but nothing was a problem. There are occasional patches of ice in the trail but it isn't bad. All signs in place including a new one for Gleason.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pretty easy day for Pepper, with a few critters to chase, water if he wanted it and a soft footpath. He searched awhile for better alternatives at several of the stream crossings, but in the end he had no problems.

Comments
Comments: This was Plan B, but it turned out to be a pleasant woods walk which felt more like a late October hike. We passed four guys who were going to stay overnight at the shelter, otherwise the trails were ours. I recommended light traction although it was only needed at one crossing. They could have been used at some other crossings and places on the trail, but those sections were so short it wasn't worth it to me to stop and put them on. The road walk is tolerable, better in "winter" than mid summer.
