Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Car Spot at Pine Bend - parking on the side of the road icey, but room for cars, I believe there were 3 when we left off the car. Oliverian parking lot was sanded but still icey, plenty of room!
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction, Traction, Ice Axe
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Multiple water crossings today! Everything was rock hopable. A little tedious at times though.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Too many blowdowns to keep track off... Kate Sleeper Trail is like a lumber yard. It has been cleaned up some over time but it is a mess again.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn't see any today, but I can imagine it could be tricky for them with the amount of ice compounded by the steepness.

Comments
Comments: Gorgeous day! Just beautiful when we started then clouded in towards the end. Oliverian was postholed and frozen - used microspikes. Passaconaway cutoff was not bad, looks like it was packed out at some point with snowshoes manageable ice - used mircospikes. Square Ledge - good shape - same as Passaconaway Cutoff. The .7 up and then the .9 down from Passaconaway was treacherous I would recommend crampons I took a good tumble, thankfully caught myself before wiping out the other two hikers behind me. We were tired of changing in and out of snowshoes/spikes/etc. took a lot of time from the hike! Rollins Trail - blow downs, ice, postholed. Kate Sleeper - miserable. One minute snowshoes next spikes next bareboot on and on. Lots of hoping and ducking with all the down trees. South slide was dry and not very icey, the only part of today that was in good shape! Tripyramid Trail - not bad, some post holes and a good amount of ice but thankfully lots of trees to brace your descents and ascents. Gorgeous views too! Scaur Ridge - pretty rough. Technical ice flows, LOTS of postholes (until the first water crossing on Pine Bend roughly) the postholes actually became useful for footing though. Pine Bend - many water crossings all manageable. It has a good base the rain thankfully didn't ruin this trail too much! Great hike with my husband and Jon. Enjoy the warmth for some hikes!
