A spectacular day on Monadnock with a fun group of 12. Temps not too cold with bright sunny skies and light winds made for a wonderful trip above treeline. Coming down White Cross, where we were completely out of the wind and in the bright sun, it was downright warm.
Most trails are packed out fairly well, the lower section of White Dot being the best. Climbing Spellman took some care, especially on the steep scrambly section which had some loose snow underfoot, but it generally wasn't too bad. There was a good base of snow to cover the ice. A few of us carried snowshoes, but overall they weren't really necessary. There are a few rough and posthole-ey spots along Pumpelly Ridge between the Spellman junction and the summit where they might be useful, but not for long stretches. A few of us also carried crampons but they were not needed.
Terrific weather / conditions and a great group made this an awesome hike! |
