At the beginning of the trail near the barn I put my snowshoes on expecting the trail to be a little soft but in the morning it was pretty well crusted over. I considered switching to Micorspikes but left the snowshoes on (MSRs sans extra floatation) for a little extra traction plus added stability over the frozen tracks and some giant postholes. On the way down the trail softened up a bit so the shoes stayed on all day.
The clouds were high enough to allow for clear views north toward the Whites with the added bonus of the views south during ascent and descent. I was a little surprised - but not at all disappointed - that I did not see another person on my hike today. |
