Beautiful sunny day hike up Mt. Pemi. Warmer than forecast (mid 20s), no wind. Trail was perfectly packed top to bottom. Could have bare booted easily enough, but the trail is steep enough in places that the packed snow would be slippery without some traction. I used Trail Crampon Pros that were perfect for the conditions. MicroSpikes would have been fine, too. Left the snow shoes in the car. Didn't need them.
To the sides of the hard packed trail were frequent postholes where people had stepped off the trail and sunk in to the knees. |
