It was an interesting day hiking Hedgehog Mountain on Saturday, which included dropping my gloves then undropping them due to the kindness of strangers, chatting with old timer Mike (who lives two towns away from me) at the East Ledges, and running into some folks I "know" from the Facebook hiking groups I'm in. Sunny and warm weather made for a stellar day along the edge of the Sandwich Range, my favorite area of the Whites.
The eastern half of the loop was a well packed sidewalk all the way to the East Ledges. Between the ledges and the summit, things were a bit rougher, then better again after the summit and down the western half. I carried snowshoes but did not need them, I wore Hillsounds the whole way. The trail had softened up a bit as the day went on due to bright sun and warmer temps. As long as you stay on the track, you should be good. Stepping off just a little bit on either side resulted in postholing. Lots of people out on the mountain today... |
