April Foolish trail bagging was on my mind today. Lovely clear day, barely a breath of wind and bountiful sunshine made for a pleasant day that required patience and purposeful steps. The day started out sweet with enough snow that I could skate on my tele skis up the trail. Halfway up the Spellman Trail I fought the ice covered leaning trees while smashing my stiff boots into the firm ice and snow to make steps. I did know it would be icy and difficult but by the time I hit the ridge my thoughts of summiting were long gone. Ice fell from the trees and covered the icy trail with thousands of little ice cubes. Best part of the day was the fun ski down the Birchtoft before the snow got very soft and slow. Slogged on and enjoyed the day very much. Only person I saw all day was one that was leaving the parking lot as I was gearing up. A few more warm days and all the ice will be gone. |
