Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: One spot at TH, one pull of parking just S of it, otherwise it's find a spot and walk the road. Sandwich Notch Road from south to TH is okay for cars. I saw some pickups coming from N but cars? I thought there used to be a sign on the access road where the Mead base camp split off the Sandwich Notch Rd but there is none now. Stay left.

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail was generally in great shape with one stretch of water/mud and a few wet areas, but there was a lot of broken small spruce in/across the trail. I must hae taken out 20 of them. There is still some larger blowdown to be addressed but really only one, on the first climb up, that will force a walk around.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Trail is generally dry but the mighty tough little dog found enough water. He got one lift on the climb up but he probably could have found a way around it if given a chance. Saw some bear scat; I've run into bear on this trail but they've always run from me. I let Pepper stay off leash but kept him close.
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies were present, at least lower down, but the wind and hiking kept them away. But if the wind stopped while I was taking out a blowdown, they buzzed and even landed.

Comments
Comments: On our way to Garfield I stopped at the USFS HQ to see if Tripoli Rd would be open this weekend (no) and on the way out picked up an old bolt in a tire. By the time I got that fixed it was late, so we did this hike which I wanted to do Sunday. It is mostly a lovely ridge walk with some decent views in places (especially of the big lakes), it gets way less traffic than Morgan-Percival and you can add extra peaks as you want. It's also easier on aching heals. On return leg passed two people; otherwise only saw hikers on Percival doing the loop. Great way to use up some leftover 09 vacation.
