The trails were wet and VERY muddy, with a few patches of snow and ice near the summit. The summit itself was mostly dry, though. The Mead Trail could use some maintenance; see trail maintenance notes. The Guinea Pond Trail was flooded at the swamp, so I 'whacked around the power lines, eventually going through some thickly wooded bogs (darn wet feet) and rejoined the trail. Sandwich Notch Rd. was closed but in good condition. The Bearcamp River Trail was in excellent condition, and Beede Falls were spectacular!
As far as the weather goes, it was a mixed bag. At the beginning, there was some sun and no rain, then as I ascended it began to pour and become socked-in. Once I reached the top, however, the skies cleared and the views were excellent! Then the clouds and rain came back during the descent, only to let up near the end. Weird.
One more thing to note: as I walked Sandwich Notch Rd. and the Bearcamp River Trail, I heard several gunshots, and I saw a police cruiser stop at the beginning of the road as I drove out. What the heck was the gun user doing that warranted a police visit?
Overall a good day despite the wet feet and gunshots. |
