Sable is a very easy whack. There are many game trails, old hiking & skidder trails and old logging roads in mostly open woods. I started at the Slippery Brook/Baldface Knob trail junction. If you look to the NW (half right) you will see what looks like a very old trail. This path will take you W for ~1/4 mile to a wet area. I bypassed this wet area to the N (right) keeping S Baldface off my right shoulder. I stayed at an elevation of ~2,700'. After ~1 mile I headed SW to the saddle between Sable and the bump just N of Sable. As soon as you gain the high ground you will run into an old trail. This trail made for easy work to the top of Sable. The "recognised" summit is ~30 yards to the S of the high point of Sable. From here I headed N on the old trail to the last bump before the saddle between the N bump and S Baldface. I took a generally NE track to S Baldface staying to the W (left) of the large exposed slabs. There are many "openings" going up the steeps. This will get you on the Baldface Circle trail to within 150 yards of the S Baldface summit. |
