The trail through the hardwoods was wetter than two weeks ago. Once you enter the spruce/balsam woods there was a consistent snow cover of 1 to 2 inches from last weekend. But by the time I came down it began to melt and was quite slushy in the places exposed to the sun. From Starr King to Waumbek the trail had some monorails but with the recent cold temperature it was solid and there was no problem postholing. The only problems were the old postholes one tended to slide into. Carried snowshoes and microspikes but they stayed on the pack. A few warm days will take care most of the snow cover and one can easily get to the summit without any tractions. Met a couple from my hometown with their dog enjoying a wonderful day. Noteworthy were the many beautiful flowers in the hardwoods. |
