Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There's room for a modest number of cars; there were a few today.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock hops. I went upstream a short ways to cross Anderson Brook on dry rocks. Notch Brook had a line of small rocks to cross on; a couple were loose and several just under water.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: New multi-stem blowdown just after the first brook crossing. The largest beech stem was too big for me to efficiently go after with my saw. East of Norcross the water bars are new or newly cleaned, and good sized. West of it the water bars were in mostly good shape; I managed to clean a few that weren't of debris, but a couple were hardened and my hiking poles just scratched the accumulation. I tossed a bunch of debris out of the trail west, which really wasn't a problem but the trail was so nice it felt useful. All signs are in place.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Great day for Pepper. Plenty of sip n dip streams, plenty of solitude and comfy temps and of course, excellent treats with his best buddy.

Comments
Comments: Nancy Pond east of Norcross has had an amazing amount of trail work, new water bars in the lower section, an amazing re-route through a boulder field in the middle, and bog bridges galore in the upper, many new. In its upper section it is a wood walk; using the planks or the many many roots one could hike almost all of it on wood of one sort or another. Nancy Pond west in contrast hasn't had or needed a lot of work although it is nice to see working waterbars and the trough through thick spruce-fir nearing Carrigain Notch is impressive. It is a wonderful woods walk, with a nice footbed and gentle slopes, through some splendid spruce groves. The Nancy herdpath has obviously had a herd on it; it is very easy to follow. We started out Carrigain Notch to go to Stillwater Jct, but decided to spend some of that time doing some quick water bar cleans.

We only saw 5 other hikers all day, happily one of them was Loanshark bagging his 97th NEHH. We also had a couple of nice trail talks with Craig who was hiking Carrigain via Desolation but redlined up to Norcross. A couple were hiking in to camp overnight. Nancy Cascades are impressive, but the gray light when we were there both times wasn't conducive for good picture taking.

Thanks Pepper for another wonderful hike. I had fond memories of this trail; there is a special feeling of solitude in the woods and trails in the eastern part of the East Pemi wilderness.
