Comments: Twin Top (South Shoal Pond Peak), Shoal Pond Peak

Long uneventful backpack to the Thoreau Falls/Wilderness trail junctions. Pine island is a more interesting alternative to east side. Some cool artifacts. I walked up Thoreau falls trail about 3/4 mi and began to bushwhack to twin top. Fairly easy woods and not too much snow. From the recognized high point I headed for the north peak of twin top. According to the national geographic map the height difference is only four feet. At the north peak I found an orange string, suggesting that the lower summit once had a register. I bushwhacked straight for Shoal pond peak, through mostly good woods. Lots of false summits before I arrived at the high point.

I had planned to head north to the AT. However, in doing this I immediately hit terrible woods covered in melting slush. Given that it was getting late and I knew there was much better going to be had, I changed plans and headed east to the Shoal pond trail. In doing this I enjoyed mostly open woods. I walked a short way north to visit shoal pond. Then returned to Thoreau Falls tr around dark, where I had left some overnight gear. I hiked a short ways north of the bridge and made camp.
